Dairy Arts Center, Boulder May 4, 17 – Jam key Jam once again stole the show with their breathtaking performance. The concert “Shastra featuring Jam Key Jam: One Night Only” was beautifully organized by Dairy Arts Center in association with Shastra. James Bailey, the director of Dairy Arts Center, Payton Macdonald & Reena Esmail, the founder of shastra and the special guest for the evening open heartedly accepted, enjoyed and connected to the unique genre of music that Jam Key Jam presented. From the varieties of sets show’s beginning, which featured the expressive, sensuous voice of Sangeeta Ganguly, Compositions of Reena Esmail played on Viola D’amore by Matt Dane and clarinet Virtuoso Conor Brown and Dhrubad singer Payton Macdonald. The concert was followed by masterful North Indian Kathak dancing by Sarah Morelli, Carrie McCune and Cailey Salagovic as Sureela Ensemble performing on a traditional composition based on raga khamaj originally composed by Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. To the closing number, the stage was covered by Jam Key Jam. The music was challenging, the melodies beautiful and the drumming intense. Tabla Player Nabin Shrestha and Sitar Player Bijay Shrestha started their performance with a rendition of beautiful Raga Rageshree set to vilambit (slow) teental (16 beats rhythm cycle) keeping the calmness among the audiences. With the gradual speed up, drummer Gilly Gonzalez and percussionist David Hinojosawhich joined them in which was a unique representation of how western drumming can beautifully accompany, hindustani classical without harming its tradition and which left the audiences to spell bounded.
